From SQF1 to SQF3: What is SQF and why it matters for your food business

Updated: Jan 3

SQF (Safe Quality Foods) certification is often required by retailers and other food industry players, so having these certifications can help food brands gain access to new markets and customers.

When a brand works with manufacturers who have an SQF certification, it ensures that the food products are produced in a safe and controlled environment, reducing the risk of contamination and foodborne illness.

If you are a brand that is just starting out, paying attention to this detail can remove a lot of needless obstacles from your path.

Below we discuss the three levels of SQF certification: SQF1, SQF2, and SQF3.

SQF 1

SQF Leve 1 is an introductory stage focused on food safety.

Often referred to as "Food Safety Fundamentals," this level targets producers handling low-risk food items. To achieve this certification, producers must be aware of and apply essential food safety measures.

How it’s different: For example, a manufacturer will most likely have completed programs regarding Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) as well as sanitation practices and allergen controls.

Why it matters: This is essentially the baseline for getting into any grocery stores or retail chains.

SQF 2

SQF Level 2 is the intermediate level and includes all of the requirements of SQF 1, plus additional quality management systems.

SQF 2-certified facilities have implemented more robust quality management systems to help ensure consistent, high-quality products.

How it’s different: This often includes HACCP implementation, internal audits as well as Supplier Verification to ensure regulatory compliance and identify potential hazards or areas for improvement.

Why it matters: You may need this level of certification to access more specialized food retailers or to produce private label products on a larger scale.

SQF 3

SQF Level 3 is the highest level and includes all of the requirements of SQF2, plus more advanced food safety and quality management systems.

SQF3-certified facilities have implemented the most comprehensive food safety and quality management systems, which can help reduce the risk of foodborne illness and ensure the highest level of product quality.

How it’s different: This high end certification typically is utilized to ensure comprehensive allergen control, product recalls processes or crisis management procedures alongside deep traceability systems.

Why it matters: You will commonly find these most stringent requirements in specific industries like pharmaceuticals or baby formula manufacturing as well as when exporting to regions with strict regulatory standards.

It's worth noting that the SQF system is continually evolving, and new versions of the SQF Code may introduce changes or additional levels. Therefore, it's essential to consult the SQF certification body or auditor to ensure you have the most up-to-date information regarding the certification levels and requirements that will be important to you.
